Aspect-ratio dimensions for images and design canvases
Aspect ratio is width divided by height. To preserve a ratio w:h, height equals width × h ÷ w. A 16:9 canvas at 1,280 pixels wide is 720 pixels high.
Aspect-ratio dimensions for images and design canvases
| Width : height ratio | Exact example dimensions (pixels) | Total pixels | Orientation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | 1,080 × 1,080 | 1,166,400 | Square |
| 4:3 | 1,200 × 900 | 1,080,000 | Landscape |
| 3:2 | 1,200 × 800 | 960,000 | Landscape |
| 16:9 | 1,280 × 720 | 921,600 | Landscape |
| 9:16 | 1,080 × 1,920 | 2,073,600 | Portrait |
| 4:5 | 1,080 × 1,350 | 1,458,000 | Portrait |
| 2:1 | 1,200 × 600 | 720,000 | Landscape |
| 3:4 | 900 × 1,200 | 1,080,000 | Portrait |
Formula & method
Height = width × ratio height ÷ ratio width
Pixel count = width × heightChoose a shape, then scale both dimensions by the same factor to preserve it. If the result is not an integer, choose compatible whole-pixel dimensions or accept a small rounding difference. Cropping to a ratio and resizing while preserving a ratio are different operations.
These are mathematical examples, not accepted ad sizes or upload limits for any service. Verify the destination’s current requirements separately. Pixel count alone does not determine compressed file size, sharpness, aspect-correct display or the physical size on a screen.
Worked example
Reducing a 1,280 × 720 image by half in each dimension gives 640 × 360. The aspect ratio stays 16:9, but the pixel count falls from 921,600 to 230,400: one quarter of the original.
What can change the answer
The ratios describe width to height, not print DPI or device pixel ratio. Video and image encoders can add alignment constraints beyond this arithmetic.

Percentage Calculator
Calculate a percentage of a base value and the value after that percentage is added or removed. Enter a negative base only when it makes sense for your task.
Aspect Ratio Height Calculator
Matching height equals width multiplied by ratio height divided by ratio width. At a 16:9 ratio, a width of 1,920 pixels gives a height of 1,080 pixels.
Screen Pixel Density Calculator
Pixel density equals the diagonal pixel count divided by the diagonal screen size in inches. The diagonal pixel count comes from the square root of width squared plus height squared.
Raw Image Memory Calculator
Raw image bytes equal width × height × channels × bytes per channel. A 1,920 × 1,080 buffer with four one-byte channels occupies 8,294,400 bytes before other memory overhead.
